Media Justice Fund

Between 2006 - 2008, Wisconsin Community Fund made three rounds of Media Justice Fund Grants to 16 organizations in Wisconsin, totalling $103,745. The Media Justice Fund was a limited-term, national program of the Funding Exchange.

Recent Grants

2008 Media Justice Fund Grants

WNRB-FM  93.3 LP - Wausau - $5,000

The grant will be used as a stipend for a part time station manager and for web-streaming, which will enable Hmong listeners around the state and the world to tune in to Hmong and progressive programming.

Progressive Media Project - Madison - $5,000

The grant will be used for two Media Policy Advocacy Clinics to train community-based nonprofit organizations and individual activists in advancing effective, creative and ongoing media justice dialog. Both workshops will utilize the Progressive Media Project's "Voices of Diversity" media toolkit and focus on effective op-ed writing for regional and national distribution.

CityWIDE LPFM - Madison - $5,000

The grant will be used to train progressive political groups and youth from local community centers to frame their own stories for presentation to the public, teaching the technical skills required in production, as well as analysis of corporate media.

Milwaukee Muslim Women Coalition - Milwaukee - $6,000

The grant will be used to build the MMWC website as an alternative to the hundreds of well-funded websites that are dedicated to denigrating Islam and Muslims and promote a false understanding of Muslim women.

9 to 5 Milwaukee - Milwaukee - $7,000

The grant will be used for staff time, equipment, supplies and meeting expenses of the "Making the Media Ours' project.  Members of 9 to 5 will be trained in the methods of media creation by giving them the tools and skills to tell their own stories and advocate for change.

Voces de la Frontera Action - Milwaukee - $7,000

The grant will be used to train immigrant workers and student leaders on how to use tools to challenge and shift the way the media frames the immigration debate.

Native American Educational Technologies - Hayward - $5,000

The grant will be used for the "Voice of the People Project" which secures and increases the public media infrastructure to guarantee a place for the viewpoints and interests of the diverse, rural, poor, northern counties. 

 

2007 Media Justice Fund Grants

Progressive Media Project - Madison - Media ToolKit $ 5,000

The grant will provide two Advocacy Media Clinics to train community-based nonprofit organizations and individual activists to effectively, creatively and regularly advance their issues and constituency interests in the media. Both workshops will utilize the Progressive Media Project's "Voices of Diversity media tool kit, but will further develop writing skills and provide follow-up assistance with editing, placing and tracking commentaries in local, statewide and regional newspapers, as well as web-based publishing venues.

Workers Independent News Service - Madison - Community Media Collaboration $6,500

The grant will be used to support a community-based organizer/producer. This position unites two distinct functions: organizing to enhance access to the media and news production. The community-based organizer/producer will help the community understand how the media functions and thus assist the media. In addition, the position will include the more traditional interviewing and production. Wisconsin distribution of the news will be undertaken by Workers Independent News (WIN).

Center for Democracy in Action - McFarland - Community Media Collaboration $5,000

The grant funds 3 Race and Media Forums which will connect print and electronic media, not only to create relationships that provide sources "beyond the usual suspects" in the communities of color, but also to educate media representatives on key issues relating to both individual communities of color and issues that span the spectrum of such communities.

CityWIDE LPFM - Madison - Community Media Collaboration $5,450

The grant will be used to support a Low Power FM station. Purchase and install broadcast equipment (Transmitter, Limiter, Emergency Alert System Decoder cables and antenna installation on tower) and pay licensing fees for the operation of the station (BMI and ASCAP fees). To build a studio for youth at the Lussier Teen center. This will include computers for non-linear audio editing as well as a mixing board, microphones, headphones, and CD players.

Milwaukee Muslim Women Coalition - Milwaukee - Community Media Collaboration $5,500

The grant will be used to conduct a one-day seminar on the role of the media and the current climate of Islamophobia (racism and bigotry towards Muslims). The funds will be used to secure national experts with extensive experience conducting workshops and seminars for members of the media. Funds will cover travel, hotel, stipends, and meals for the speakers. Funds will also be used for brochures, mailings, and any needed handouts to members of the media, university communication departments, anti-racism organizations, etc. Funds will also cover audio-visual rental the day of the event as well as some of the staff's time.
