Social Justice Grants - Fiscal Year 2005-2006
Wisconsin Community Fund has committed itself to the defeat of racism in American society. For fiscal year 2005-2006, groups and projects addressing racism through Youth & Leadership, Economic Justice, GLBT Rights, Women's Rights, Rural Organizing and Peace and Anti-War were given priority consideration. WCF made grants totalling $ 157,663 to a wide variety of grantees.

General Fund Grants - 2005-2006

The Peace Education Project is part of Peace Action Wisconsin, which encourages education and activism against violence. This grant will be used to purchase a custom-activities-computer system for the office that will improve PEP's performance and capacity to organize for peace and justice. The updated networked system will greatly enhance efficiency and organizing outreach

| Grassroots Leadership College | Madison | $ 5,000 |
|
Based in Madison, this organization works to improve communities throughout Dane County by developing strong leaders and lasting relationships. Funds will be used to develop and implement a Spanish language aspect of the grassroots leadership training programs.

| Voces de la Frontera | Milwaukee | $ 5,000 |
| This organization focuses on
educating low-wage and immigrant workers regarding their rights. Funds
will go towards financing a Web site for Voces to encourage statewide
chapter growth as well as towards partial staff time to develop
leadership skills in the membership and support Voces campaign work.

| Interfaith Coalition for Worker Justice | Madison | $ 5,000 |
|
Comprised of a coalition of individuals, interfaith bodies, labor unions, religious congregations and community organizations, Interfaith works to educate workers about their rights while building relationships among these groups throughout South Central Wisconsin. Funds will be used to help cover salary and benefit expenses for the staff and to help launch the Madison Interpreters' Collective to increase access for non-English speakers and assist organizations to reach out to non-English speakers.

| Founded in 2004 by the
Milwaukee Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center, this
new organization's mission is to improve the LGBT political voice in the
community. Funds will be used to hire an organizer to work in
Milwaukee's African American and Hispanic neighborhoods on public
education and organizing around the plight of LGBT families. This will
help counter attempts by the right wing using cynical manipulation
around "gay marriage" to organize communities of color against
the LGBT community. Twenty percent of the grant will go for direct
lobbying.

|
TAPIT/new works to make connections among people of different backgrounds through the arts. This grant will go towards several art residencies based on collaboration with community groups and schools to explore key social, political and economic issues.

| Wisconsin Apprentice Organizers Project | Madison | $ 7,500 |
|
By increasing the numbers, diversity and abilities of community leaders, this organization works to create and strengthen community relationships. Funds will be used to help with the salary for an apprentice to be placed with a group working for social change and social justice in either Madison or Milwaukee.

| This self-advocacy organization
focuses on educating and assisting people with disabilities. Funds will
be used for targeting outreach to increase membership and influence in
People First among people with disabilities of different racial
backgrounds as well as establishing People First for persons of color in
Milwaukee. The grant will also be used to begin addressing the plight of
people with cognitive disabilities in the prison system.

|
This project partners Madison with a sister city in El Salvador, creating bonds and support in the fight for peace, justice and democracy. The grant will be used to cover six months salary for the part time staff/main organizer.

| Hmong American Women's Association | Milwaukee | $ 10,000 |
|
Through family strengthening programs and a youth program, the Hmong American Women's Association works to develop and strengthen leadership in the Hmong American community. Funding will be used to add a community organizer component to an existing half-time outreach coordinator to continue the work with Hmong refugees. The bulk of this funding will be used as salary to create a full-time community organizer.

Special Opportunity Grants - 2005-2006
| LGBT Resource for the Seven Rivers | Seven Rivers | $500 |

(September 2005) Funding went towards helping out with printing and advertising and film costs for the film festival to be held in conjunction with "Coming Out Day" last October. The LGBT Resource Center is a relatively new organization and the idea for the film festival was developed after the year had been planned. In order to hold down costs, the films were shown at UW-LaCrosse and there was no charge for attendance. In conjunction with the film festival, the Resource Center brought "Love Makes a Family," a photo-text exhibit developed by the Family Diversity Project, to LaCrosse.

(October 2005) The Peace Education Project, a part of Peace Action Wisconsin, has a history of innovative initiatives around peace in the Milwaukee area. This grant went for the initial startup costs of a PEP television program on Milwaukee Area Television Access (MATA) Community Media station.

| (October 2005) Family Connections
helps families with incarcerated members maintain relationships by
having volunteers accompany the children of incarcerated mothers make
the trip to Taycheeda Correctional Facility. Funds went towards the cost
of volunteer recruitment and a training session for the volunteers this
past fall.

| (December 2005) Funding went
towards the organization ot assistance and training programs for
community organizers in Milwaukee.

| Freedom, Inc | Madison | $250 |
| (December 2005)This organization
provide specific cultural and linguistic community organizing trainings
to new refugees.

| Community Action on Latin America | Madison | $500 |
| (January 2006) Funding went for
Mario Garcia Sierra to travel to Venezuela for the World Social Forum,
an open discussion for the exchange of ideas among many groups working
for social justice throughout the world. Sierra attended this forum and
presented report-backs and workshops around Wisconsin upon return.

|
(February 2006) Funds helped pay for application for 501 (c)3 status. "Timebanking" is an innovative way for low-income families to help meet each other's needs. For each hour spent helping someone else, a person can get an hour of someone else's time. This process is used across the country.

| WISPIRG | Statewide | $500 |
|
(February 2006) WISPIRG (Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group) works to uncover threats to public health through investigation, media exposition and litigation. Funds went to help pay for travel of trainers for the Midwest Student Energy Conference, which brings together students from across the Midwest to build a network of activists focused on energy issues and technologies used by universities and colleges. This is the first such conference in the Midwest.

(April 2006) WNPJ is currently involved in the production and distribution of a Statewide Fair Trade Directory, which serves as a valuable resource to all who support fair trade practices in Wisconsin. The grant helped supplement the costs incurred by production and distribution of the Directory, including work study that brings youth and diversity to the WNPJ office.

(April 2006) Funding was used to help pay for travel costs for the film crew of Break Borders, a film about break dancing and how it creates international communities that transcend racial, ethnic, religious and geographical boundaries. Screening the film is part of the Stop the Rail to Jail Conference, a day long youth-run conference, which targets Wisconsin high school students on building community and breaking isolation through hip hop and leadership.

Fund Of The Sacred Circle - 2005-2006
| Red Cliff Land Recovery Project | Bayfield | $ 10,000 |

This group,
created in 1999 works to reacquire and preserve the land of the Red Cliff
Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa in Northern Wisconsin through
education, planning and conservation. Portions of the grant go towards the
creation of this land trust. The Red Cliff Band is the second poorest
Chippewa Tribe in Wisconsin. The Tribe's land was signed away to the
federal government in the 1850's, the primary reason for the poverty now
engulfing the reservation (49% unemployment during winter months). The
current grant will be used to transition the project into a land trust. |
