2006-2007 Media Justice Fund Grantees
Wisconsin Community Fund (WCF) has announced seven recipients of Media Justice Fund grants.
Each group received $5,185, totaling $36,295. Funded groups will use the money towards one of two categories delineated by the Fund.
The Media ToolKit is comprised of materials in print, audio, video, digital, web-based or Power Point formats that provide language and understanding around media policy and advocacy, and the Community Media Collaboration grants support campaigns that change the structure of the media and a community’s right to use and be fairly represented within it.
The Media Justice Fund was founded in 2002 as an initiative of the Funding Exchange, a nationwide network of 16 non-profit organizations, of which WCF is a member.

| Progressive Media Project | Madison | $ 5,185 |
| Progressive Media Project is an affiliate of the Progressive magazine and has been presenting writing clinics since 1993 for social justice activists and nonprofit staff from around the country. The material presented is constantly updated and modified based on participant feedback.
The grant will help to develop a "Voices of Diversity" Toolkit to educate social justice activists from communities who are generally underrepresented in the mainstream media, including people of color, women, LGBT individuals, youth and low-income individuals to use the op-ed or commentary page of newspapers to communicate their views to Wisconsin residents.

| Project Girl | Madison | $ 5,185 |
| Project Girl is an art-based program targeting adolescent girls from broad socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Project Girls will collaborate with the Center for Media and Democracy to create an educational video to provide adolescent girls the tools necessary to deconstruct and analyze messages embedded in the media. The video will be created in collaboration with adolescent girls.

| WORT-FM Backporch Radio | Madison | $ 5,185 |
| WORT-FM has been providing alternative news, music and outreach to the south-central Wisconsin area since the 1970’s.
Funds will be used to create a Community Media Outreach and Production Toolkit in English, Spanish and Hmong: 1) an outreach guide for social justice non-profits to utilize existing media (print, radio, television, internet) and publicize their event or organization; 2) a guide to critical reading and decoding messages of corporate media; 3) a manual for production of community-based news and public affairs programming.

| Madison Community Wireless Advocates | Madison | $ 5,185 |
| Madison Community Wireless Advocates is a grassroots, volunteer group organized to support and encourage the creation of free or low-cost wireless network throughout the city and county and empowering community members.
Funding will create two Community Wireless Internet Access pilot projects in two Madison neighborhoods - Darbo-Worthington and Troy Gardens. The project would provide free wireless internet connectivity to residents and terminal for access for those with out computers. The project would feature classes for those wishing to learn more about the internet. After the initial installation, residents would be given access through a “library card type” system at no cost for usage.

| New Moon Productions | Milwaukee | $ 5,185 |
| New Moon Productions aims to promote sustainable change through engaging people at the heart of societal issues by revealing the more complete and complex story. The series Guns, Grief and Grace in America. will be aired by American Public television through PBS and other outlets.
Funding will be used for an Assistant Outreach Coordinator Position. New Moon Productions is currently working on Part 3 the award-winning 3 part series, Guns, Grief and Grace in America. The Right to Bear Arms: One State’s Perspectives (working title) invites significant statewide networking of non-profit education and advocacy organization, health care and public health professionals, social activists, law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, faith based organizations and others eager to join the momentum of this creative endeavor. the anticipated outcome is to expand the frame for discussion of gun violence from one of singularly 2nd Amendment to one of Public health.

| Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition | Milwaukee | $ 5,185 |
| Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition, a volunteer driven organization for more than 12 years is the only Muslim women’s organization in the Milwaukee area. It provides support for Muslim women, both native and foreign born in the Milwaukee area.
Funding will be used for an all day workshop on Islamophobia and the Media to be held this fall. Expenses include travel, lodging and stipends for national experts in the areas of Islamophobia and the media. Funds will also be used for mailings, advertising, informational packets as well as audio visual equipment for the day of the workshop.

| Fair WI Education Fund (formerly Action WI Education Fund) |

| Action WI Education Fund (now Fair WI Education Fund ) is a statewide LGBT civil rights organization that has focused its work on providing a voice for pro-gay marriage supporters.
The grant will help with a continuation of statewide work to improve the quality and quantity of media coverage of LGBT issues. The model gets local LGBT leaders and community members involved in reporting LGBT issues in their area and supports their work to get positive coverage around key issues. The program also includes monitoring and responding to local media coverage of LGBT issues, scheduling editorial board meetings through out the state, responding to media requests and writing columns about LGBT issues.
